Tips for Choosing Ceramic Tile for Your Flooring Project

January 1, 2012

Ceramic tile is a popular choice for homeowners undertaking a flooring project and for good reason. A ceramic tile floor requires very little in the way of maintenance once it is installed and lasts for years. The design and color options are also almost endless, allowing a homeowner the freedom to truly create floors that express their personal style vision.

Choosing the right ceramic tiles for your unique project may at first seem like a daunting prospect with so many different options available. Here are a few of the basic considerations to keep in mind:

Choosing a size – Ceramic tiles come in many different sizes ranging from tiny 1”x1” tiles suitable for a kitchen backsplash to much larger options that are ideal for flooring purposes. Many people choose larger tiles for their floors as from a design perspective they do tend to make a room look bigger. However if you want to get truly creative there is nothing to stop you mixing ceramic tile sizes to achieve an interesting design effect.

Color – The color of the ceramic tiles you choose for your flooring project is of course a completely personal decision and will be affected by many of the other elements in the room. However a good rule of thumb worth remembering is that lighter colored ceramic flooring tiles will make a space appear bigger and brighter but dark colors will add warmth and depth to a room.

Using neutral colors will allow you to change other elements on the room seamlessly but if a particular bright hue appeals to you there is nothing to stop you going for it, as long as you remember that it will be around for a long time!

Texture – For flooring purposes it is best to choose a ceramic tile that has a certain amount of texture and is not too slippery to the touch. Most ceramic tiles have a rating that will help you determine how suitable a particular option might be for a flooring project.
