maintenanceThe industry biggest hit by the economic slump is the real estate industry.  This means that the value of homes at the moment are at their lowest.  With this kind of real estate situation, it is more important than ever to preserve the value of your home.  Now, more than ever, it is important that we do not neglect home maintenance to prevent further degradation of our home’s value.

An essential part of the home that requires diligent maintenance is insulation.  Improper insulation means higher utility bills and a lot of energy loss.  Windows and doors should be inspected to ensure that no air is getting through that may result in heat loss during the winter.  During summer, good insulation likewise keeps cool air from air conditioning inside.

Safety is also an important part of good maintenance.  To prevent fire hazards, appliances and ovens need to be turned off when not in use.  Moreover, the electrical should also be inspected and maintained regularly.  Chimneys should be cleaned regularly to keep the home energy efficient.  To protect the home from water damage, the gutters should be cleared of debris and any blockage.

Other than insulation, humidity levels should be kept at proper levels throughout the home.  Keeping humidity too low makes the atmosphere dry and uncomfortable.  Conversely, high humidity can cause bad smells and damp spots.  Too much moisture in the air will also damage wood.  As such, it is advisable to invest in a good humidifier and dehumidifier to maintain the proper levels of humidity within your home.

If you want your home to be of good value, prevention is always the key.  Taking care of the home may have costs, but you will incur higher costs from repairs if it is neglected.
