Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring – Nail Down or Glue? Which Installation Method is Better?

October 8, 2010

Bamboo flooring is fast becoming one of the most popular choices for homeowners who love the look of hardwood flooring but want to be eco conscious in their new flooring choices. There are a number of different types of bamboo flooring but one, strand woven bamboo flooring that provides extra durability (thanks to the weave) as well as a unique appearance.

Installing new bamboo flooring correctly is essential if the floor is to last as long as it is supposed to. If the floor cannot be floated the homeowner is left with two other installation options – nail it down or use glue to install the strand woven bamboo flooring.

Whatever method you pick adequate attention must be paid to the condition of the subfloor before installation begins. It must be swept clean and all dirt and debris removed.

If you chose to glue down your strand woven bamboo flooring the subfloor needs to completely dry, or the adhesive will not bond properly and the boards may eventually loosen. Make sure the glue you are using is suitable for the purpose and is low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds)

Nailing down a strand woven bamboo floor is a lot trickier but the results, if done well, means the bamboo planks are less prone to loosening over time. Done well is the key word here though as a messy nail down job can end up looking a real mess.

If you are going to use the nail down method you will of course need a good nail gun. We recommend a Powernail Models 50P or 50M (with P standing for power and M for manual) Use a 1-1/2 inch cleat with a  .200 adapter pad with 1 shim for the best results.

A very experienced DIYer can probably do a good job of installing strand woven bamboo flooring utilizing either method. But if you have never installed a floor before invest the extra and have a professional install it for you. You will be very glad you did and your new floor will thank you as well.
