Can the Colors in Your Home Really Change Your Mood?

September 9, 2010

Is it possible that adding certain colors to a room, whether on the walls, the floors or in the form of new window treatments could actually alter a person’s mood when they walk into it? According to design experts the answer is a resounding yes.

Color, like beauty, can be very much in the eye of the beholder. Some people may love red drapes in a room because of the color’s stimulating effect while others may loathe them because they are rather intense.

Even childhood memories can change the way people perceive a color. A person may love using yellow to decorate a room but only because it evokes say, a happy memory of picking daffodils as a child.

Color perception also depends upon where you happen to come from. In North America we associate white with weddings purity and cleanliness. However in Japan it is a funeral color, associated with loneliness and death.

Even world events can change the ways people perceive colors. In the Great Depression what designers call the “taupe age” was ushered in, partly because few people were in the mood for jolly bright colors around their homes.

By the same token the post war optimism of the 1950s brought splashed of bright color back into home decorating incorporating “happy “ colors like pink and green.

What colors inspire you? What colors seem to put you in a better mood? Determining which these are can help you when you are planning the look of the rooms in your home.

Whether you are shopping for new carpets, new window treatments or perhaps even new ceramic tile for the bathroom if the colors you chose make you happier then you will certainly get more enjoyment out of your home in general.
