Caring for Granite Kitchen Counter Tops

August 19, 2010

Granite kitchen counter tops are becoming more and more popular every day. The sheer beauty possess combined with their extreme durability is hard to beat and many people find that they are far more affordable than they imagined before they started shopping for new kitchen countertops.

As durable as they are  (granite is formed from volcanic magma after all) your new granite counter tops will need a little tender loving care from you in order to keep them looking as wonderful as they did the first day they were installed.

Some people complain that after a certain amount of time their granite counter tops begin to dull. This dulling however rarely has anything to do with granite itself though. Instead it is caused by a build of detergent or dish soap which some are used to using to clean their countertops. Over time a film builds up on the surface and it does indeed appear duller.

To clean granite countertops on an everyday basis, all you really need is a little hot water and a clean sponge or cloth. There are a number of specialist granite cleaners on the market that you can use on a regular basis that do help keep your granite counter tops in good shape.

Do not use acid based products to clean your granite countertops. Such things as vinegar or ammonia based cleaners will erode the granite countertop sealant, decreasing its useful lifetime.

Most people recommend that a granite counter top be resealed once every twelve months or so but that is not a hard and fast rule. The easiest way to tell if it is time to reseal them is to sprinkle a few drops of water on them. If the water does not bead up it is indeed time to reseal.

Granite is very, very tough but the occasional chip or crack can occur. The good news is thought that most of them can be easily repaired by a good professional.
